Why are there weird blotches of toner on my printouts?

Toner cartridges are complicated things. You think they’re just a cartridge that will run out of toner and stop working, but towards the end of their life cycles they can do strange things. Like leaving weird blotches of toner on your paper.

There are a lot of moving parts in a printer: toner cartridge, drum unit, fuser, pickup rollers…

There are also a lot of moving parts in a toner cartridge! When you print, the toner cartridge puts toner on the page. The drum unit and fuser work together to fuse the toner to the page. There is left over, unfused toner that the toner cartridge sweeps off the page into the waste toner chamber.

For many printers, your toner cartridge has a chamber that holds unused toner, and a chamber where waste toner is added. Some printers have a separate waste toner container, but the results are the same.

When the waste toner chamber is full, it can overflow and cause weird blotches to show up on your prints. This often happens towards the end of your cartridge’s life cycle. Sometimes your printer will even tell you that you still have toner available.

The only way to fix the weird blotches on your paper is for you to replace your cartridge. If your toner cartridge has a built-in waste toner chamber, there is no way to empty this waste toner chamber (and wow, would it be messy!). If your printer has a separate waste toner container, you can simply change the waste toner container.

So there are two ways to look at the lifespan of a toner cartridge. A toner cartridge will last as long as there is unused toner in the cartridge, and as long as there is space in the waste toner chamber to hold waste toner.
