Why is paper jamming when I try to print?

You’ve just changed the toner cartridge and you’re ready to print a big job. You go to the printer and the paper is jamming. How frustrating!

It’s probably not your cartridge. There are usually two reasons why your paper is jamming. Sometimes there is a tiny piece of paper stuck in the paper path of your printer. If you open up the printer to look at the path the paper takes from the paper bin to the output tray, you may find a tiny corner of paper stuck in there. This can cause paper to jam during your print job.

Another reason paper can jam in your printer is because the rollers are old. If your printer is older (more than 2 years old) this can be the reason. Printers can have lots of different rollers in them to move the paper through the paper path. Feed rollers, paper pickup rollers, separation rollers… There are a lot of moving parts in a printer!

The types of rollers you have will depend on the make and model of your printer. But all printers have some types of small rubber pieces that move paper through the printer. And these rubber pieces get old and worn over time.

Paper feed rollers, paper pickup rollers, separation rollers are rubber rollers in your printer that guide the paper. They get worn over time due to regular wear and tear. You can purchase the paper feed rollers individually or in a maintenance kit, depending on your printer model. There are lots of other items in a maintenance kit, we’ve detailed this in a separate post.

Paper feed rollers are easy to replace. You can get a printer technician to install them, or you can do it yourself. There are YouTube videos of paper feed rollers and maintenance kits being installed on many different printer models. Just search for “how to replace paper feed rollers on” for the make and model of your printer.

People think printers are simple, but there are a lot of moving parts. Your ETB Account Manager is happy to answer any questions you have about your printer consumables, including tiny rubber rollers! 😊
