What should I do when my prints are dark?

You have just installed a new toner cartridge (that you bought from ETB, of course). The printed pages are coming out darker than the last toner cartridge. It’s strange that your prints are dark. It looks like this new cartridge is putting more toner on the page than the last toner cartridge. Why on earth would this happen?

It’s pretty normal for a new toner cartridge to cause darker prints. Sometimes it’s not noticeable. Sometimes the dark prints fade back to what you know as normal over a short period of time. Sometimes it’s really annoying and you want to do something about it.

If your prints are dark since installing a new toner cartridge, you can fix it. The settings are usually on your computer printer menu. There will be a setting for toner density. Some printers call it EconoMode or Economy Mode. For some colour printers there is a toner density setting for each cartridge. In this case it may be useful to print out a test page to see what specific colour (or colours) are printing darker.

For most printers the default toner density setting is right in the middle (usually 3 on a scale of 1 to 5). You can adjust the density setting here to make it lighter (set it to 1) or darker (set it to 5).  A lower toner density setting will use less toner, so you’re saving money. And often a lower toner density setting will print your pages faster, so you’re saving time too!

If your prints are dark and you are having trouble finding the toner density or Economy Mode setting for your printer, you can always check with the internet. Ask your favourite search engine “how do I change the toner density settings” for your printer make and model. There are plenty of useful tutorials online.
