How can I make my colour cartridges last longer?

It’s really useful to have a colour laser printer. You never know when printing something with a bit of colour will be necessary to understand the document. Highlighting text, using different font colours are all helpful additions. But this means you’ll need to buy colour cartridges as well as black cartridges.

Colour toner cartridges are usually cyan (blue), yellow, and magenta (pink). Your printer mixes these primary colours to make all the other colours. But did you know that even if you’re just printing in black and grayscale, your printer is using some of the colour cartridges too?

On a standard colour laser printer, your printer will add some of the colour cartridges to create the black and grayscale. This means that even if you’re printing only black and grayscale, you’re still using some colour. Because of this, you may have to replace your colour cartridges more often than you would expect, based on your printing habits.

The good news is that there is a solution! If you know you will be printing files that are only black and grayscale, you can tell your printer to print in black-only mode. You can find this setting in your computer’s printer properties menu. It’s usually under the Print Quality menu. This will stop the printer from using your colour cartridges to print only black and grayscale documents. This also means you won’t have to change your colour cartridges as often.

If you are having a hard time finding the printer settings on your computer to print in black-only mode, you can always ask the internet. Just go to your favourite search engine and ask “How do I print in black-only mode” for the make and model of my printer.
